Sunset over the dunes of Jericoacoara in Ceará

Jericoacoara — "Jeri" to regulars — is one of Brazil's most beautiful villages: car-free sand streets, dunes that spill into the ocean and legendary sunsets. But Jeri has to be earned. From Fortaleza, plan on roughly 5h40 door-to-door: a long paved road to Jijoca, then a 4×4 crossing over the dunes, the only way to reach the village.

The trip isn't complicated, but getting it wrong can mean being stranded in Jijoca, paying twice, or missing your jardineira. This guide covers all of it, honestly.

Step 1 — Reaching the dunes at Jijoca

Jericoacoara can only be reached by crossing the national park dunes. The paved road itself ends at Jijoca de Jericoacoara, about 300 km west of Fortaleza. This is the first — and longest — leg of the journey: nearly 5 hours of driving through the sertão and villages of Ceará.

Three ways to cover it:

Option 1 — Shared door-to-door transfer (Recommended)

An air-conditioned shuttle picks you up directly from your hotel, pousada or apartment in Fortaleza — Meireles, Beira Mar, Mucuripe, Praia de Iracema, Centro, Aldeota, Praia do Futuro — or at Fortaleza Airport (FOR). It drives you to Jijoca, where the 4×4 jardineira takes over to the village. One ticket, both legs included, fixed schedule and support in English. From R$210/person one-way, or R$400 round trip. By far the simplest option for international travelers.

Option 2 — Rental car or private car

You can reach Jijoca by car from Fortaleza, but no car can enter Jericoacoara: the final stretch crosses the dunes and is only passable by 4×4. So you must leave your vehicle in a guarded lot at Jijoca, then pay for a 4×4 jardineira for the crossing. Once you add up rental, fuel, parking and the 4×4, the total often exceeds an all-in transfer — with no support if anything goes wrong on the road.

Option 3 — Public bus

Technically possible, but not recommended for most travelers. A bus from Fortaleza's main station (Rodoviária) reaches Jijoca in 5 to 6 hours depending on stops. From there, you still need to find and pay for a 4×4 jardineira to cross the dunes to the village. No hotel pickup, signage in Portuguese only, and luggage to mind at every change. Unless you're very comfortable with Brazilian transport, the time and stress saved is well worth the price difference.

Step 2 — The 4×4 dune crossing

Once at Jijoca, the best part of the trip begins. The 4×4 jardineira — an open, raised vehicle built for sand — crosses the dunes in about 40 minutes to the sand streets of Jericoacoara. It's the only access to the village, and one of the most spectacular in Brazil: lagoons, white dunes and the first ocean views.

If you booked with Transfer Jerico, this crossing is already included and the shuttle's arrival is synced with the jardineira — no waiting in Jijoca, no on-the-spot haggling. Note too that Jericoacoara is a car-free village: once there, you get around on foot, by bike or by buggy.

5 things to know before you go

  1. Book ahead. Transfers and jardineiras fill up fast in high season (July, December–January, Brazilian holidays). Book at least 48h in advance.
  2. Budget the park fee. Entry to Jericoacoara National Park costs R$41.50 per person (~US$7.94), not included in the transfer. Pay it online in advance to skip the line.
  3. Leave early. Departures toward Jeri run between 7am and 8am so you arrive early afternoon and catch the sunset on day one.
  4. Carry cash. There are ATMs in Jericoacoara but they can be empty or overloaded in high season. Bring enough reais for your first few days.
  5. Pack reasonably. The 4×4 jardineira has limited space: one suitcase + one backpack per person. For oversized luggage, let us know at booking.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Fortaleza to Jericoacoara?

Can you drive to Jericoacoara by car?

Not all the way to the village. The paved road ends at Jijoca; the final stretch to Jericoacoara crosses the national park dunes and can only be done in a 4×4. You must leave your car at Jijoca and take a 4×4 jardineira.

Is the park environmental fee included?

No. The Jericoacoara National Park fee (R$41.50, about US$7.94 per person) is set by the park and is not included in the transfer price. It is paid separately, online or on site.

Which Fortaleza neighborhoods do transfers depart from?

Transfer Jerico picks up from Meireles, Beira Mar, Mucuripe, Praia de Iracema, Centro, Aldeota and Praia do Futuro, as well as Fortaleza Airport (FOR). The exact pickup point is confirmed at booking.

What time should you leave Fortaleza?

Is the public bus to Jericoacoara safe?

The route is generally safe but poorly suited to tourists: several hours of bus to Jijoca, in Portuguese, then a 4×4 jardineira to arrange yourself to cross the dunes. For a first trip, an organized transfer is far less stressful.
